Public relations veteran Valerie Chereskin, owner of Chereskin Communications, is retiring after operating her own firm since 1991. She plans to travel and focus on her first love, playing music. She currently plays the flute with several local ensembles and chamber music groups. She also volunteers with Villa Musica, a non-profit community music center.
Before starting Chereskin Communications, Valerie’s work experience included Wurlitzer Organ, Motorola (Automotive Division), Motorola (Communications division), Motorola (Semiconductor Division), Computer Intelligence, and Qualcomm. At Motorola Automotive, she was the first woman to attain a position in sales and had Caterpillar, Inc., the world’s leading heavy equipment company, as a her main customer.
“I got into PR after working in marketing and sales because I like to write about business and could sell good stories to the media,” she said. “I learned PR by doing it, working as a contractor for other PR agencies, but also studied and got my accreditation from PRSA.” Chereskin was the winner of the 2013 PR Professional of the Year award from the local Public Relations Society of America chapter.
Among her biggest client successes were emerging technology startups that later were sold, including DriveCam Inc. (now called Lytx, Inc.) for $500 million, LifeProof for $300 million and Networkfleet, now owned by Verizon.
She recalls a time she was in Dallas on a connecting flight to attend a business conference in Cancun when a client called. “The client was afraid that a story had been leaked to the press, and he wanted me to return immediately to San Diego. I had to make a spilt-second decision. So, my husband and I got off the plane just before the doors closed. As it turned out, the story did not get out and, sadly, we missed out on the trip to Mexico.”
“It’s been a great career, but I am ready for the next chapter.”
